Can democracy and human dignity survive overpopulation?

Several years ago, the columnist Bill Moyers asked science fiction writer Isaac Asimov if human dignity and democracy could survive human overpopulation.

“It will be completely destroyed,” said Asimov. “I like to use what I call my bathroom metaphor: if two people live in an apartment and there are two bathrooms, then both have freedom of the bathroom. You can go to the bathroom anytime you want to stay as long as you want for whatever you need. And everyone believes in freedom of the bathroom; it should be right there in the Constitution.

“But if you have twenty people in the apartment and two bathrooms, no matter how much every person believes in freedom of the bathroom, there is no such thing. You have to set up times for each person, you have to bang on the door, “Aren’t you through yet?” and so on.”

Obviously, Asimov understood the overpopulation-equation better than most Americans.  He understands the environmental aspects as well as quality of life issue facing all of us with population overload.

While Asimov brought the “bathroom metaphor” front and center. You can see how it works in places like Indian.  That country features the largest “democracy” in the world.  Is it succeeding? Answer: not at all.  If you visit India, you will be confronted with enormous poverty and human degradation on a scale that cannot be imagined or defined by an average American. 

A whopping 1,000 children die of dysentery, diarrhea and other water borne disease every day.  Over 40 percent of Indian children suffer malnutrition.   One hundred percent of their rivers suffer horrible pollution in that they run to the ocean filled with sewage, chemicals and other toxic pollutants.  Millions live in abject entrenched poverty and illiteracy.  Can they improve it? Not a chance!  India grows by a net gain of 12 million more annually.

Asimov concluded with the profound observation:

“In the same way, democracy cannot survive overpopulation,” said Asimov. “Human dignity cannot survive [overpopulation]. Convenience and decency cannot survive [overpopulation]. As you put more and more people onto the world, the value of life not only declines, it disappears. It doesn’t matter if someone dies, the more people there are, the less one person matters.”

Therefore, Americans may want to ask themselves if they want their country to add another 100, 200, 300 million more people in the next 60 years.  Will Americans be able to solve the problems of pollution, water shortages, energy and resources shortages?

At some point, the answer: NO!

We really need a plan to move toward a stable and sustainable population in America and around the world.
