Concern About Wind Turbines in Palm Beach County Florida Affecting Birds

Wind Turbines in Palm Beach County

by Michael Baranski

Concerned Citizen of Palm Beach County

The status of the project is still up in the air but the US Army Corp of Engineers is proposing listing the project under a general permit. What this means is that the public or NGOs or any other interested party will not be given the opportunity to comment and/or scrutinize the project and the risk assessment report. This assessment report written by the Wind Capitol folks and Normandeau Assoc. states minimal risks to birds and bats from only a one year study. We know the risks are greater but to fully understand what these risks are at least a three-year study must be done by the wind farm people. That is responsible science. But not only do we need more sampling we also need accurate analysis of the data – something which the wind farm people seem to lack. This is absolutely baffling and irresponsible of the Army Corp to potentially allow this to go through without mandating the necessary research be conducted. We need to let the Army Corp and Ecological Services know we are concerned about the permitting process and the status of the entire project. WE MUST LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD!

Jane Graham from Florida Audubon has written a letter stating Florida Audubon’s concerns.  Paul Gray, a lead scientist from Audubon has been combing over the 700+ page risk assessment and has major concerns with its conclusions.  Contact me at [email protected] and I will email you a copy of the letter.  It addresses many serious concerns for our nesting and migrating birds, bats, and wildlife.

For those of you who have not done so please consider taking 5 minutes of your day to write a quick email, you may use the text I included below.    You have no idea how important it is to let these people know the public is monitoring the status and concerned about the outcome of this project.  A simple email can go a very long way and can influence the decision making of those involved.

For those of you who would like some background info on this project I have included a few links from what our local newspapers have written about this project over the past few years.

Ask them these simple questions.
