Melting Ice Cap 'Unstoppable,' Cities Going Under 10 Ft Sea Level Rise: 'It's Really Happening'

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Massive regions of the ice sheet making up West Antarctica have begun collapsing in a process scientists have worried about for decades and fear is likely unstoppable.

Too little too late

Researchers warn that the accelerated pace of disintegration is expected to remain relatively slow over the next 100 years. After that point, however, it will speed so fast that it could become a major issue for seaside cities when ocean levels could rise by at least ten feet, according to two papers scheduled for publication this week in the Science and Geophysical Research Letters.

“This is really happening,” Thomas P. Wagner, chief of the NASA program on polar ice, told the New York Times Monday. “There’s nothing to stop it now. But you are still limited by the physics of how fast the ice can flow.”

The authors of both papers conclude that the cause of the melting is warm water swelling up from the depths of the ocean, warming the ice sheet from below, and not by slowly-warming air temperatures, although intensifying winds are contributing by pushing the warm water through West Antarctica.

Scientists believe global warming have made the winds have been made stronger, and thus more damaging. This has been more visible this tornado season and is due to become more destructive. to property and lives. This problem is worsened by West Antarctica’s location, as the ice sheet sits level in a bowl-shaped depression in the earth.

The dire forecast confirmed Monday was first predicted by Ohio State University glaciologist John H. Mercer in 1978: The ice at the edge of the bowl will melt and move into deeper water, creating more instability, according to Times’ Justin Gillis and Kenneth Chang,

Even if the melting were suddenly stopped and reverted to earlier levels, Ian Joughlin, University of Washington glaciologist and lead author of a paper in Science, said it would still be “too little, too late to stabilize the ice sheet…There’s no stabilization mechanism.”

Climate change is one topic the normally contentious scientific community agrees upon almost universally. Dating back to Mercer’s initial prediction in 1978, studies have consistently indicated that human influence on the Antarctic ice is imminent.

“The scarcity of the observations in the Antarctic makes it harder to identify and attribute temperature trends, but it does not make it impossible,” climatologist Nathan Gillett of Environment Canada told the science journal Nature in 2008. “Warming in both polar regions has many potential impacts – for example on ice-sheet melting, sea level and on polar ecosystems.”

The abstract of a study published in Nature Geoscience four years later, in December 2012, was less circumspect: “There is clear evidence that the West Antarctic ice sheet is contributing to sea-level rise. We confirm previous reports of West Antarctic warming, in annual average and in austral spring and winter, but find substantially larger temperature increases.

“In contrast to previous studies, we report statistically significant warming during austral summer, particularly in December-January, the peak of the melting season. A continued rise in summer temperatures could lead to more frequent and extensive periods of surface melting of the West Antarctic ice sheet.”

While the studies slated for publication this week estimated that the problem won’t become more severe for another 100 years, other scientists have been less generous.

A 2013 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences warned that without a drastic curb in greenhouse gas emissions, at least 80 US cities and towns could be at least partly underwater by 2100. According to the latest study, it’s too late to save those cities – and others that will be impacted by deadly high-wind storms.

More Global Warming PROPAGANDA and BS.

      • WarAngel77711

Pole shift, less than a century. More like any day. Big storm after big storm after big storm…global warming might be propaganda and BS…but they changes the Earth is going through are VERY real.

…”a major issue for seaside cities.” What cities? They’ll all be gone by then.

Scientists are SPECULATING that the Antarctic Ice Cap will break loose in the next TWO HUNDRED to a THOUSAND years! Quit it with the BS scare tactics.

      Melting Ice Cap ‘Unstoppable,’

Yep that is right, Mother Nature does what she does best, Keep the species in check and balance with guess who :) ” Nature”, Please do not wake up Albert Gore. I can’t afford to be taxed on Rain, Wind, and fire.

On the other hand I do believe there is a problem with the speed at which the earth is revolving on its axis and it is creating a wobble, the speed is not fast enough and needs to be taxes, a speed tax sound appropriate. Yes call it a rotation tax,

Oh, good grief. You’re right about one thing. Alarmists have been making predictions for decades now.

Only none of them have come true. Snowfall is not a thing of the past, in the U.K.. Greenland’s ice sheet is still frozen. Temperatures have not risen in 17, going on 18 years. There has been no increase in frequency or intensity of storms.

      We have tornadoes every year.

Antarctic sea ice extent is near the all-time record.

At the February summer minimum, Antarctic sea ice was up 15% from 1979.

There is a reason why alarmist predictions don’t come true. They don’t know what they are talking about.

Their theory violates the 2nd law of thermodynamics. “Back-radiation” from a colder substance does not increase the temperature of a hotter substance. And you cannot demonstrate otherwise.

Seriously, show us one example from a laboratory, or from industry, where “back-radiation” does that. You cannot.

Many of us are sick to death of these charlatans and their promises of doom. Everything they say has been disproven.

      • DRAUGR

Brother you can say that again.
Oh, did you hear the latest? This is for real. It seems now that the sky is falling. This is due to all the people on the ground breathing in the air. When this happens the air from above has to drop down to replace it. Fortunately Al Gore has a plan. Now it’s going to take everyone’s cooperation to fix this but his scientists have run sophisticated computer models and they verify that the plan will work. Al Gore, being an authority on such things, has come up with the ingenious solution of using giant helium gas bags to support the sky. To make this fair (not everyone uses the same amount of air) all citizens must wear special bracelet that monitors their air consumption and this will determine your contribution in the form of a “Sky is falling tax” or simply abbreviated SIFT. So when you get your next paycheck you will notice that it has been thoroughly but fairly SIFT’ed through.

Your BoB needs new batteries mate your losing the plot.Climate Change is a natural process GET over it.<:o)

      • DRAUGR

Of course it is. To think that man has made any significant influence on the world in the short amount of time (barring nuclear waste) that he has been here is ridiculous. As an example. One big volcanic eruption, and we have had several in my lifetime alone, produces more “greenhouse gasses” than all mankind has combined over his entire existence. I believe that there is climate change. I do not believe that it is as occurring as fast as some would say (that is politically motivated to get into your wallet) nor do I believe that man has anything to do with it. Climate change is driven by three things that currently we do not have control over. The movement of the earth’s core, the movement of the ocean currents (which both can be influenced by external sources such as gravity from another large body in space) and the sun. Climate change is similar to the seasons we experience every year except that it happens over a much broader time span. It is usually natural, has happened many times before and will continue.
But you have to look at it this way. As for man’s ability to change the earth just look in your local river or beach and it won’t take long for you to spot a plastic bottle. Ask yourself this. In 100 million years will that plastic bottle still be floating around? Of course not. The sun and the elements will have broken it down about 99.999 million years prior. Do you think that people will still be drinking from plastic bottles a million years from now? I doubt it. Hopefully by then, if we are still around, we will come to see the wastefulness of a disposable lifestyle. Everything man made consumes energy, therefore it is in essence stored energy and should not be wasted. But we are not there technologically yet. But barring any major setbacks or our unfortunate demise, we will get there. It just takes time.

Well, then there is a hell lot of work to do for the supercruiseship
      construction industry..
(oh for heavens sake, are there enough metals for building many, many supercruiseships?)

      • DRAUGR

Why sure there is. We can recycle old aluminum cans and I hear even John Kerry has some of, what he calls, junk metal lying around that he’ll just toss at you for nothing. And if we do run out of metal all we have to is harvest thee trees from the land that is already going to be flooded. Then you’ll have a floating condominium made from wood that actually creaks like an old timey sailing ship. So quit worrying, everything is going to be alright. If you need something to take your mind off of all your concerns, you can go home and start rounding up those aluminum cans or you and the kids can plan where which submerged country you’d like to float over first. It’ll be fun. I promise.

    • DRAUGR

I can’t wait. I mean if it rises gradually there will be plenty of time for evacuation so no one gets hurt. Then all I have to do is wait and before you know it I have beach front property worth a hundred times more than I paid for it. Oh boy what a deal. It’s about time I caught a break.
Eminent domain? No I haven’t heard of it. What do you mean they’ll take my new beach house and turn it into a condo? They can’t do that! Can they? Well this really bights.

    • The Rift

Its called SPRING, it happens every year, don’t believe the climate change and global warming nonsense. Nothing is going to happen. Just more weather BS.

    • Ridd10

You can melt all the sea ice and the sea level will not rise.

However if the Ice that is on land melts you will have sea level rise.

You have proven your own stupidity and gullibility by failing to understand this basic scientific principal. Go learn some real science please.

    • CrowPie

Watching a documentary a few weeks ago I learned that the Chinese were actually the worlds first ( before the Vikings) sailors.

Their largest ships were 300ft long and housed 500 sailors. Supplies were enough to last for months on the open ocean and included chickens and livestock.

With these discoveries ancient maps were found of the entire globe. These maps included the Antarctic……..with no ICE.
