Washed Ashore Recycled Trash Art Exhibit Opens at SF Zoo
A new exhibit of recycled trash art that has been transformed into uniquely beautiful creature sculptures is opening this week at the San Francisco Zoo. Old bleach bottles, used detritus and plastic packaging that washed up on our ocean shores have been shaped into beautiful works of art.
The innovative sculptures are intended to help raise awareness about marine trash, plastic pollution and the great Pacific garbage patch that are polluting our seas. The colorful creatures that have been built from the reused materials represent some of the sea life that is most adversely affected by plastic pollution.
In addition to being visually compelling, much of the recycled trash art in the Washed Ashore installation is also interactive; many of the unique sculptures have been designed so that the debris can be played as musical percussion instruments. The copious amounts of waste in the show was cleaned up from nearby beaches, but it represents just a small fraction of all the garbage that litters our oceans. Hopefully reshaping all of this debris into art will help educate us all to be more aware of this pervasive and growing issue.
This exhibit opens on Saturday, May 24, 2014 and runs through Sept. 21 in the zoo’s Pachyderm building. Here are a few more sculptures from the Washed Ashore exhibit:
