Mother Of Child Cancer Victim In AL Cancer Cluster Speaks Out--Alabama Cancer Clusters--Killing Children [Picture]

The Big Picture

As the mother of a child in a confirmed cancer cluster in Alabama, I know firsthand how frustrating it can be to deal with polluters, politics and public health agencies. Public health agencies at the state and federal levels are ill equipped to respond to suspected disease cluster communities. This leaves parents of children in communities where rare cancer is commonplace bearing the burden of activism. Throughout my nearly decade-long journey with childhood cancer, I have felt like a lone voice crying in the wilderness, concerned about rare cancer rates in my community, without anywhere to turn for solid answers.

But I am not alone. Throughout the U.S., parents as well as surviving childhood cancer patients are fighting the good fight of environmental justice. They petition public health agencies for help. They conduct their own studies, build websites, and solicit the media for help. Some of these crusaders bring their battles to Washington. They spend years of their lives pushing for policy changing legislation. Others have produced documentaries or been the subject of books and documentaries that shine the light on childhood cancer in America and our forgotten cancer clusters.

Displaying a passion and courage that could only come from fighting for their lives and the lives of their children, these warriors are fighting to raise awareness about rising childhood cancer rates, the lack of funding for childhood cancer research and the national tragedy that is our government’s do nothing response to suspected and well documented cancer clusters in America.

This page is dedicated to the people who have sacrificed their lives for our children. These amazing folks – some of whom I have had the honor of knowing – are my heroes. Please learn more about them so you can help them in their fight.
