Selenium: The Efficient Sunlight Catching Substance

A research team from Berkeley’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (California) embedded zinc oxide with selenium and found that the ability of zinc oxide to absorb sunlight efficiently increases when selenium is added to it.

Zinc oxide is an inexpensive photovoltaic material that has the capability of converting huge amounts sunlight to the efficient renewable source of solar energy and electricity. The only problem with zinc oxide was that it could not absorb sunlight that effectively. However, after this research performed by the Berkeley Lab, this problem will also be dealt with conveniently. Selenium is the solution to the problem and it is being called anti-sunscreen substance by most of the researchers now.

Marie Mayer- A doctoral student in UCB (University of California, Berkeley) and a member of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Solar Materials Energy Research Group said that solar power researchers have been trying to find out ways in which solar cells could be made more efficient and less expensive. She is even conducting studies and researches in the Berkeley Lab to discover novel materials which can become sustainable renewable energy sources.

Mayer is mainly concentrating on that part of her work which will help in the future to produce vehicles that are hydrogen-powered and give out no harmful emission. These vehicles will basically be powered by sunlight and water because of the photo electrochemical water splitting reaction in which the water will split into oxygen and hydrogen gases utilizing the sun’s energy. But Mayer does not give any indication as to when the hydrogen cars will come into existence.
