5 Ways to Protect Our Planet’s Coral Reefs

Today, the world’s coral reefs are under threat. The list of threats is endless and every single one has been caused by humans. This includes climate change and rising water levels, overfishing and poaching, as well as water pollution caused by sewage and agriculture. And the rate at which our oceans’ coral reefs are deteriorating is alarming. With the Great Barrier Reef (the world’s largest barrier reef) declining by 50% in just three decades.
But everyone can do their bit to help, and you don’t have to be an environmentalist or conservationist to have a positive impact. Here are some of the ways that you can help to conserve our oceans and the planet’s beautiful coral reefs.
1. Donate to a Charity
Charities such as the Coral Reef Alliance and The Reef-World Foundation fund conservation projects all year round. You can get involved by making a one-off donation or monthly donations to support the cause. There’s also the chance to volunteer abroad with some charities if you want to take a more hands-on approach to the problem.
2. Conserve Water
One of the easiest ways you can make a difference in the home (or at work) is to reduce your water usage. The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater there is polluting the seas, and managing consumption can easily be achieved by anyone. Time your showers so you don’t spend too much time with the water running, keep washloads to once per week, and do your dishes in a bowl rather than with the tap on. These are all small changes that we can make that could have big impact on the earth’s coral reefs.
3. Shop Ethical
Another way you can help the cause is to choose ethical brands and retailers to shop with. Selecting companies that care about their footprint helps to reduce the impact on the environment. Some brands will donate a percentage of proceeds to help fund conservation projects too, so try to choose these over other brands when shopping.
4. Switch Energy Supplier
Going carbon neutral helps to reduce your carbon footprint and pollution. So always opt for the greener option in the home. This can be as simple as switching energy supplier – step away from the Big Six energy firms and go with an eco-friendly company instead. Not only will this help the planet, but it can cut your energy bills too.
5. Walk or Cycle to Work
Another fantastic way of managing CO2 emissions is to walk or cycle instead of driving. If your work commute is too far, use public transport instead. You could also look into getting an electric car to replace your petrol / diesel vehicle. Electric cars are predicted to replace all gasoline cars by the year 2040 and there are already a number of affordable vehicles on the market right now.
