GARETH PENNY VISITED NORILSK TO ENSURE THAT NORILSK POLLUTION IS BEING PROPERLY TAKEN CARE OF

Gareth Penny, the Chairman of Nornickel’s Board of Directors, paid a working visit to Norilsk. He personally got acquainted with progress implementing the most crucial projects of the Company in the Norilsk industrial region.

During his trip, Mr. Penny inspected the effectiveness of the main activities carried out for recovery from the accident at CHPP-3 both in the area of ​​the CHPP and at adjacent water bodies – the Ambarny and Pyasino rivers and Lake Pyasino. This inspection was aimed at assessing the Company’s efforts in combating Norilsk pollution. The Chairman also got acquainted with the initial results of the Clean Norilsk project, a large-scale program to clean up the territory of the Norilsk industrial region from litter. The Company is working to restore the Norilsk environment and invests billions of rubles to achieve this aim. Another major goal is to increase Norilsk life expectancy and the condition of the city residents’ health, as part of Nornickel’s corporate social responsibility efforts.

Gareth Penny committed to a diverse set of activities during his visit to engage deeply in evaluating the Company’s success in reviving Norilsk ecology and Norilsk public health. He:

• visited the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant and assessed progress on construction of the Sulfur Program facilities aiming to address the issue of Norilsk sulphur dioxide pollution;
• got acquainted with the monitoring system launched in Norilsk to evaluate the levels of emissions with special sensors set up at the local buildings and facilities of the Norilsk Division enterprises;
• learned about the work of the Center for Planning, Organization and Monitoring of Mining Operations at the Skalisty Mine, where mining dump trucks began to work in unmanned mode;
• visited the Norilsk beneficiation plant and the Zapolyarny mine and held a meeting on industrial safety.

Mr. Penny was astonished by the work that has been carried out throughout the past two years by the Company and its subsidiaries. Nornickel faced several major challenges including a fuel spill in 2020 and flooding of mines in 2021. According to Gareth Penny, the fuel clean-up was carried out efficiently and the operations of the mines were practically back to normal conditions. He added that the Company’s goal now is to ensure that these calamities never happen again. Hence all the Company’s operations and activities should be done safely and with the utmost respect for the environment. “Zero tolerance for fatal injuries is an absolute priority for the company,” Mr. Penny said.

The Chairman additionally noted the efforts invested in cleaning Norilsk from litter, scrap metal and abandoned buildings and structures, as well as significant progress in the implementation of the Company’s environmental strategy, including the Sulfur Program. Nornickel’s environment and climate strategy represents an ambitious direction towards profound environmental protection, including protection of the air, water bodies, land, biodiversity and advancing waste management and recycling. Gareth Penny believes that this program represents the most important project for Nornickel on an international scale.
