A Practical Home Checklist for Storm Season

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Storms can expose small maintenance issues that are easy to ignore during dry weather. A blocked gutter, loose outdoor item or damaged seal around a window may not seem urgent until heavy rain and strong wind arrive at the same time.

A short inspection before storm season can reduce the chance of preventable damage and make it easier to respond when severe weather is forecast.

Clean gutters and check downpipes

Leaves and debris can stop water from draining freely from the roof. When gutters overflow, water can end up against fascia boards, walls or other parts of the building that were never designed for constant saturation.

Check that downpipes are clear and that water is being directed away from the house. If you are not comfortable working at height, this is one job worth leaving to someone with the right equipment.

Secure loose items outdoors

Outdoor furniture, umbrellas, pot plants, children’s toys and lightweight garden equipment can move surprisingly far in strong wind.

Store or secure anything that could become airborne. It is also a good time to check fences, gates and small garden structures for loose sections.

Inspect windows and doors

Look for damaged seals, loose hardware, cracked glass and frames that no longer close properly. Water can be driven into small openings during a storm, so problems that are barely noticeable in normal rain may become more obvious in severe weather.

For people already considering external window protection, there are several options ranging from screens to shutters. Roller Shutter People is one example of a Sydney-based provider whose residential range illustrates how shutters can be used as an everyday window covering as well as a physical exterior layer.

Trim problem vegetation

Branches over roofs, driveways and power lines deserve attention before they become a hazard. Dead or damaged limbs can fall during high winds, while overgrown vegetation can block gutters and drains.

Large trees should be assessed by a qualified arborist rather than cut back without understanding how pruning may affect the tree.

Check drainage around the property

Walk around the house after normal rain and see where water naturally flows. Low spots beside the building, blocked surface drains and garden beds that hold water against walls can all become more serious during a downpour.

Make sure stormwater grates are clear and avoid stacking materials where they could block runoff.

Prepare for short power outages

A few basic items can make a blackout much easier to manage: charged power banks, torches, spare batteries and a plan for medical or essential electrical equipment.

Avoid relying entirely on phone torches because a storm is exactly when you may want to conserve phone battery for calls, weather alerts and other information.

Review the house after the storm

Once conditions are safe, walk around the property and check for new damage. Look for lifted roofing, damaged gutters, water marks, fallen branches and changes around doors or windows.

Catching a small issue quickly can prevent it becoming a larger repair. Storm preparation is less about predicting exactly what will happen and more about removing obvious vulnerabilities before the weather tests them.
