New technology means the end is nigh for the TV licence fee

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Ryan Bourne, Head of Public Policy at the Institute of Economic Affairs, has written an excellent article for City AM, arguing what we have been arguing, that the emergence of new technology means the end for the TV licence.

As I commented last week, Tony Hall, BBC Director-General, has made a good case for the existence of the BBC, but not for the licence fee. Indeed, as Ryan rightly points out, if the BBC gets its way and insists that iPlayer users must have a licence to view content, a code will have to be entered – presumably the TV licence number. Other digital broadcasters and those who provide online content already use something similar to allow subscribers access. Why doesn’t the BBC do the same and allow us to subscribe rather than force us to pay a licence fee irrespective of whether or not we use BBC services?

We will be discussing this very issue at The Freedom Festival in Bournemouth, which runs from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 March. Guest speakers for our ‘Freeing the BBC’ debate are Prof. Timothy Congdon and Alex Deane. If if you can’t make it for the whole weekend, day rates are available. This debate will take place on Saturday 15 March at 10.00 am.
