ASH wants the state to spy on you
It was reported on the Guido Fawkes website last week that the anti-smoking lobby group ASH has a long wish-list for the coming parliament. It is certainly an authoritarian wish-list, which includes issuing carbon monoxide detectors to midwives conducting antenatal examinations to see if pregnant women are smoking. Presumably, ASH doesn’t think pregnant women are honest enough to tell the truth, although that really isn’t the point. It’s a sinister move. A pregnant women should be able to have a private medical consultation without having the state effectively spying on her.
ASH also wants to “improve national surveillance to ensure that timely and robust data are available on smoking prevalence including data on all socio-economic groups, people with long-term conditions, people with mental health problems, minority ethnic groups, the LGBT population and other disadvantaged groups.” In other words, everyone.
Smoking is a legal activity. It is up to individuals to make decisions to quit or not. ASH is very successful at getting its wish-lists turned into legislation. I imagine that they know that most of their demands will not be met, but some of them will.
This is something to keep an eye on.
