Magna Carta in the City: Can Magna Carta still protect the City and the taxpayer?

With increasing concerns that both taxpayers and the City of London are under attack from regulations (both domestic and foreign), can the principles, values and legal articles of Magna Carta still be used to protect the City and the taxpayer from abuse?

This will be the focus of an event organised by The Freedom Association and hosted aboard HMS President (1918) to celebrate and debate the meaning of Magna Carta in modern day Britain.

Speakers for this unique event include Jonathan Isaby, the Chief Executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance (TPA), and the Director of Global Britain and founding director of Walbrook Economics, Ewen Stewart.

Jonathan Isaby took up the post of Chief Executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance in January 20014, having joined the TPA previous as its Political Director. Prior to this, Jonathan was a journalist and worked for, among others, the BBC, the Daily Telegraph and the blog ConservativeHome. He recently wrote an article for the Daily Telegraph that described a power grab from HMRC as “reminiscent of tyranny” and that “the taxman’s power to raid your bank account or freeze your assets is the sort of thing that Magna Carta was meant to rein in”.

Ewen Stewart is Director of Global Britain and founding Director of Walbrook Economics, a firm which specialises in advising professional investors including institutions, hedge funds and wealth managers on their investment strategies. Ewen’s work has been published extensively focusing on macro-economic and monetary policy, tax reform and Britain’s relationship with the European Union. Recent published work includes a new book published by the Hampden Trust called Magna Carta Today: Its Principles and Relevance in the 21st Century.

The event is organised by The Freedom Association and hosted by The Hampden Trust. It is part of a series of events that are kindly sponsored by The Hampden Trust and The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy.
