Desperate Brexiters resort to LYING – UK will NOT lose abstention rights, nuclear deterrent if we stay in EU

Brexiters are getting desperate as they become more and more a minority.

They are resorting to lying and spreading fake news – once again – in order to persuade voters to leave the EU in the case of a second referendum.

A post full of fake news and lies has been circulating widely on social media – falsely claiming the UK will lose its right to abstain on any EU legislation by 2020 and other lies if it stays in the EU.

The post – which Leavers falsely claimed was written by a former army helicopter pilot (see here for more on that strange story!) – also claims that if the UK stays in the EU we will lose control of our army and be forced to get rid of our nuclear deterrent.

But pretty much the ENTIRE POST is a work of fiction.

Ironically, the post falsely claims that the Treaty of Lisbon means that by 2020 national governments will no longer have the right to abstain or veto EU legislation. This is ironic, because the Lisbon Treaty (signed way back in 2007 and put into force in 2009) does the precise opposite.

The Lisbon Treaty actually gave national governments MORE control over EU legislation.

IT DOES NOT STOP THE RIGHTS OF NATIONAL GOVERNMENTS TO ABSTAIN OR TO OPT OUT OF EU LEGISLATION.

Even more ironically, it was the Lisbon Treaty which for the first time outlined the formal procedures for member EU states to leave the EU. In other words – it was the Lisbon Treaty which made Brexit possible.

Other claims – that if the UK stays in the EU it will have to adopt the Euro by 2022 or that the London Stock Exchange will have to move to Frankfurt or that the UK will not be allowed to have its own armed forces – are also completely false.

THE LISBON TREATY DOES NOT TAKE CONTROL OF NATIONAL ARMED FORCES OR FORCE ADOPTION OF THE EURO.

The London Stock Exchange will always be in London (the clue’s in the name!) although, again ironically a lot of City of London finance jobs WILL be moving to cities in the EU such as Frankfurt.

But that will only happen if the UK LEAVES the EU, not if it stays.

The problem is, that these lies are already being widely circulating across social media, shared by people such as Tommy Robinson, and this FAKE NEWS will be believed by many voters.

The best way to counter these lies is to make and share as much as possible the rebuttals and blogposts like this one clearly debunking the lies.

This is important. Lest once again lies win over waving voters.
