Brexit kills Prosecco, according to a juvenile Metro journalist

Metro is a free newspaper with a particular liberal-left, anti-Trump/William Rees-Mogg, pro-EU, etc. ideological slant. Ironically, Metro has often been classed as being an “apolitical” newspaper! Yet this free newspaper displays its politics in its choice of subjects; its phraseology; and by subtly embedding its liberal-left political views within new pieces, rather than within editorials or commentaries…

Metro is also available to 1.5 million public-transport users six days a week.

This free newspaper excelled itself today both in terms of its cretinous journalism and its blatant (if also somewhat disguised) pro-Remain propaganda.

The title of the piece is ‘Prosecco loses fizz as Brexit hits sales’, which is written by Emily Craig. (All Metro journalists seem to be twentysomething hipsters who, of course, live in London.)

Firstly, Emily Craig tells us that

“three million fewer bottles [of prosecco] were sold last year, with experts blaming Brexit for dampening the party spirit”.

So who are these “experts” and what does Emily Craig mean by “experts”? The only expert quoted in the piece is a Martin Jones, who’s a “partner” in an “accountancy network”. (What the hell does that mean?) Yes, that’s an expert in the singular, not “experts” in the plural. And this partner in an accountancy network likes to indulge in a bit of politics too. Martin Jones asks us (as quoted by Emily Craig) the following question:

“Can anyone blame drinkers in the UK for not cracking open the sparkling wine at the same rate over the past year?

And then he finishes off by saying:

“I’m not sure 2018 will be looked back on as a vintage year for celebration by very many people.”

Really? 2018 might well have been seen as a “vintage year” by 17.4 million Brexiteers and by many others too. Or don’t Brexiteers count? And why is a partner in an accountancy network expressing such political views to a Metro journalist in the first place? Is it because they’re both on the same Remain page?

The bizarre thing is that this accountant and Metro journalist both let the cat of the bag. That is, it’s not actually the case that British people were severely depressed because of Brexit in 2018. It was simply a case of British people switching from Prosecco to “artisan gin and rum cocktails”! In Emily Craig’s own words:

“Findings suggested that the celebratory connotations of sparkling wine do not fit in with the current economic climate, while the growing popularity of artisan gin and rum cocktails have turned younger drinkers away from fizz.”

The accountant himself also tells us that when he says that “[a]fter years of growing popularity for sparkling wine, we have finally passed peak prosecco”. In other words, “young people” have stopped drinking Prosecco and started drinking “pink gin and rum”! Still, politics is so ugly and cheap any opportunity to use a story to advance a political cause (in this case remaining in the European Union) will never be squandered.
