4. Meanwhile in South Africa, Click stores ordered closed for the week. Violence promised if people try and go to work

The News:

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on Monday (7 August), moved to close pharmaceutical retailer, Clicks stores across the country as part of a campaign against racially insensitive advert shown on the retailer’s website.

The advert included pictures of four women – two black and two white – and described the hair of the two black women as ‘dry and damaged; and ‘frizzy and dull’, while the images depicting the white women’s hair were described as ‘fine and flat hair’ and ‘normal hair’.

The EFF said that the advert undermined the dignity of black South Africans and suggested that the ‘hair of black people is damaged and inferior to that of white people’.

Clicks, apologised for the campaign, calling it a mistake. As of April 2020, group data showed that Clicks has 881 total retail stores across the country, employing 15,347 people.

6. Manchester Arena Inquiry: Hearings begin into terror attack

The man responsible for the Manchester Arena attack was seen with a large backpack and thought to be praying less than an hour before killing 22 people.

A public hearing into the 2017 terror attack will investigate whether there were “missed opportunities” to identify Salman Abedi as a suicide bomber.

The inquiry heard Abedi was reported as acting suspiciously to police and security before the blast.

Hundreds were injured in the bombing at the end of an Ariana Grande concert.

Inquiry proceedings began with Paul Greaney QC, counsel to the hearing at Manchester Magistrates’ Court, reading the names of the 22 people who died on 22 May 2017.

“What happened that night was the most devastating terrorist attack in the UK for many years,” he said.

“The inquiry will leave no stone unturned.”

7. Italian mayor threatens to fine people €2,000 for WEARING a face mask

In the midst of global COVID-19 pandemic, going out to public places without wearing a face mask is considered an offense in many countries and cities.

In mid-August, Italy made wearing of masks from 6pm until 6am mandatory in all spaces open to the public where maintaining social distance is impossible. Two weeks ago, police handed out the first penalty for breaches of the rule, fining a 29-year-old maskless man who argued that “COVID-19 doesn not exist.”

But the mayor of one Italian town says fines should be slapped on those wearing a mask in an “inappropriate” situation.

10. Chicago cops ask Google for details of ALL smartphones in a 100-yard radius of a crime scene – but judges say police cannot use geofencing data to ‘rummage where they please’

US police have alarmed civil rights activists by asking Google for the details of every smartphone within a 100-yard radius of a crime scene. 

The so-called geofencing technology can ‘cast a virtual net’ around an area and identify all the devices within it, via a massive Google database called Sensorvault.

Cops say it has helped them identify suspects in murders, shootings and burglaries, but critics say it violates the privacy of innocent people who happen to be nearby.

Three requests for geofencing data in Chicago were recently denied by Illinois judges who said prosecutors cannot ‘rummage where they please in order to see what turns up’. 

Google says it only complies with requests if there is a search warrant, but will hand over the data if one is granted.  

n the Chicago case, the government sought a search warrant to find a suspect accused of stealing prescription drugs.
