1. Merck ends its vaccine program after poor test results

Data show inferior COVID immune responses versus people who naturally contracted the coronavirus

Merck & Co. is discontinuing development of its two experimental COVID-19 vaccines after early trial data showed they failed to generate immune responses comparable to a natural infection or existing vaccines.

The U.S. drug giant, which has a long history of successfully developing vaccines, had adopted a different strategy from rivals Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, using a more traditional approach of focusing on shots based on weakened viruses. One, called V590, borrowed technology from Merck’s Ebola inoculation, while the other, V591, is based on a measles vaccine used in Europe.

Both V590 and V591 were laggards in the vaccine-development race. Merck finished recruiting the first participants for early-stage safety studies near the end of 2020, when front-runners Pfizer and Moderna were preparing to report late-stage data. Merck received interim results from its trials this month.

4. Dutch mayor warns the country is heading for ‘civil war’ following violent anti-curfew protests as France and Italy admit they’re facing ANOTHER Covid-19 lockdown

(Since these kinds of protests were inevitable, in fact since they appear to be ANTIFA and immigrant driven, even planned, there is no way these politicians think that the Wuhan Flu is worse than the consequences of the lock downs, economic damage and so on, and now the rioting and even civil war. At some point we must believe that this is about destroying all our systems and borders and controls as they are to be replaced with other ones, none of us would have voted for given the chance.)

Europe’s battle against coronavirus entered a dangerous new phase this week as politicians pushed to tighten lockdown measures across the continent even after a weekend of rioting brought scenes of chaos to the Netherlands and Denmark amid warnings of ‘civil war’. 

France is due to decide whether to bring in a third national lockdown this week as Prime Minister Jean Castex warned the situation there is ‘worrying’, with Italy‘s top medic also calling for a month-long national shutdown.

That is despite John Jorritsma, mayor of Eindhoven which was hit by its worst riots in almost four decades at the weekend, warning ‘we’re on our way to civil war’ after new nationwide curfew measures sparked public outcry. 

Meanwhile hopes that vaccines might provide a quick way out of the crisis all-but faded after France’s Pasteur Institute was forced to scrap a jab it had been developing with US drug-maker Merck because it doesn’t work.

The news came as AstraZeneca – whose jab has yet to be approved by EU regulators – announced it was cutting vaccine supplies to the continent by up to 60 per cent because of problems with supply chains, thought to be due to under-production at a factory in Belgium.
