All New Cars Sold in the EU Must Be Equipped With a "Black Box" for Data Recording
From this summer onwards, all new cars sold in the EU will be equipped by law with a “black box” that is accessible to the authorities and that records all driving data.
From July 6, 2022, all automakers will be forced to equip new models with a system that records technical data.
The data recorded include “the speed of the vehicle, the braking processes, the steering wheel angle, the inclination of the vehicle on the road and whether the various safety systems of the vehicle were in operation, starting with the seat belts”.
“The new system will be introduced at the same time as intelligent speed assistance systems (ISAs) are introduced, which warn drivers if they are exceeding the speed limit,” reports Reclaim the Net . However, the ISA systems are not intended to prevent the driver from actually exceeding the speed limit.
The system, which will be available to law enforcement but not to insurance companies, will also be able to catalog the exact type of vehicle and relay the information to the manufacturers after an accident.
Authorities claim the data is being “anonymized,” which means the information cannot be used to identify the owner of the vehicle, although only incredibly naive would believe it.
For decades, the government has been pushing to equip all cars with black boxes that record location data.
The ultimate dystopian scenario is to give the police the power to use similar technology to completely disable a vehicle from working if the driver has committed an infringement.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be a criminal offense. Eventually, as the pursuit of social rating schemes continues, it could be used as a form of punishment for anything from unpaid utility bills to offensive comments on social media.
