The population of England and Wales has risen to 59,597,300, the first results from the 2021 census have shown.

It grew by more than 3.5 million (6.3%) since the previous census in 2011, and has more people over 65 than ever.

When added to published census figures for Northern Ireland and official estimate of the Scottish population for 2020, the UK population now stands at 66,966,400.

The rise is one of the biggest since the census began in 1801.

While the census 2021 breakdown by ethnic groups has not been publicly reported, here are some figures from the 2011 census.

Looking at the previous Government data available (census 2011) about the UK’s different ethnic groups, the Government reported 87% of people in the UK are White, and 13% belong to a Black, Asian, Mixed or Other ethnic group (2011 Census data).

In England and Wales, there is an agreed list of ethnic groups you can use when asking for someone’s ethnicity. The groups are usually those used in the Census, which happens every 10 years.

The main changes to the 2021 Census of England and Wales, compared with the previous Census, were:
 
the ‘Roma’ group was added under the ‘White’ ethnic group
a write-in response was added for the ‘Black African’ ethnic group
