How to Best Utilize the Results of My 23andMe

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

23andMe is one of the many for-profit genealogy companies in the world and it was founded in 2006. Based in Sunnyvale, California, the personal genomics and biotechnology company provides a genetic testing service directly to customers in which they submit a saliva sample that is analyzed in a lab. They use this process to generate reports relating to the customer’s ancestry and genetic predispositions to health-related topics.

To understand the best way to utilize the results of your 23andMe test, you should first look at the aspects of your life that are influenced by your genetics and then apply the knowledge by taking necessary action. The most popular reports people use their 23andMe raw data for are:

1. Genealogy and Family Tree: Your 23andMe results can help you locate close relatives (a birth mother), trace your ancestry, find out more about your ethnicity and overcome any dead-ends you might have encountered in drawing up your genealogy.

2. Fitness Reports: This not only includes aspects such as lung capacity, testosterone levels, muscle strength, heart capacity, and red blood cell count but also attributes like whether you are a power or endurance player. All of these are influenced by your genetics.

3. Health Reports: This report contains information on your genetic predisposition to certain preventable lifestyle conditions such as obesity, hypertension, heart diseases and type-2 diabetes. Other conditions like familial hypercholesterolemia, disorders arising due to genetic instability (Bloom’s syndrome) and autoimmune disorders (rheumatoid arthritis) are also included in the health reports from 23andMe raw data.

4. Allergy Report: This report covers allergic predisposition to give you a heads-up on your allergies. The list of detectable allergies includes common ones like pollen and lesser known allergies like misophonia and histamine intolerance.

5. Precision Medicine: This report contains information on how your system metabolizes different drugs. This data can be taken to your physician who can prescribe drugs according to your genetic make-up. A lot of medications that are presently available are “one size fits all,” but they really don’t work the same way for everyone. With the knowledge gained from the 23andMe report, doctors can fully understand how inherited differences in genes affect the body’s response to drugs. These differences in genetic composition will be used to determine whether a medication will be effective for a particular person and to help prevent adverse drug reactions.

6. Carrier Status Reports: One of the best ways to utilize your 23andMe data is to determine whether or not you are carrying a particular genetic disorder and this knowledge is useful to expectant couples. This report provides a comprehensive list of the allele status of a number of genetic disorders. Carriers of the mutant allele of a genetic disorder would not manifest disease but might pass on the variant gene to the next generation.

7. Nutrition Report: some aspects of your nutrition like metabolism of macronutrients, micronutrient requirements, and food intolerances like gluten and lactose intolerance are influenced by your genetics.

Other reports that can be inferred from your 23andMe data are: Methylation and MTHFR report, Traits and Personality report and Breast Cancer and BRCA status report.

On the subject of which is better between 23andme and AncestryDNA ( ref: “Which is Better: 23andme or AncestryDNA?” ), it depends on the reason you have for analyzing your DNA.

If you want to grow your family tree or connect with relatives online, AncestryDNA is recommended because of their larger DNA database, more communicative user base and family tree applications.

If you want quick information on your ancestry (or trace your paternal and maternal lineage separately) along with a detailed genetic health screening, 23andMe is highly recommended.
