Valero Texas Open Fantasy Preview

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Throw your hands in the air and wave’em like you just don’t care if you picked D.A. Points to win the Shell Houston Open last week. Okay, you need to stop that. You look ridiculous, and you are a liar. Points came out of nowhere to snag the Shell Houston Open trophy. Points will now go into PGA hibernation, not to be seen or heard from again until next year, perhaps.

This week we are staying in Texas as we head to the Valero Texas Open. This tournament can’t seem to find a home in the PGA Schedule. It has moved around year after year, and this year is played a week before the Masters. That will surely give it a different feel than previous years, but it is still the same course. It is played at TPC San Antonio. A lengthy 7,435 yard Par 72 course.

Group A: I know Rory McIlroy has been disappointing to say the least this year but it’s hard to pass on him considering this weeks field is very mediocre. Brendon de Jonge, Kevin Chappell, and Brian Davis all finished Top 10 last week at the Shell Houston Open. I like De Jonge the best out of those three.

Group B: Jimmy Walker is this years Bo Van Pelt in my mind. He is constantly up on the boards week after week. He has seven Top 30 finishes in his 9 tournaments this year. I think its safe to expect another strong outing this week by Jim Walker. While you’re gazing at Jimmy Walker’s beautiful portfolio, don’t forget to look at Charlie Wiiiiiii. Wi is not the safest play but could be a nice sleeper as he’s finished 4th and 17th the last two go-rounds here. Charley Hoffman has finished Top 15 each of the last three years at this course. Don’t be surprised when you’re seeing a lot of his beautiful curly blondeness come Sunday afternoon.

Group C: Group C isn’t supposed to be the premier Group, but it is this week. Charl Schwartzel is sure to finish Top 25, with a Top 5 finish most likely. Take a look at his last 12 tournaments, and he hasn’t finished outside the Top 16. That’s scary good, and absurdly consistent. If you need a bench golfer, it’s hard to go wrong with Group C this week. Jordan Spieth was born and raised four hours from San Antonio, so he should feel right at home this week. Morgan Hoffmann is a golfer that’s ready to breakout, in my opinion. He finished 2nd in his Web.com start two weeks ago and finished 15th in Puerto Rico at the beginning of March. He’s worth a strong look if you need a deep sleeper. Ryan Palmer, Bryce Molder, Billy Horschel, Scott Brown, Ian Poulter, Harris English… All good options.

Keepers

Expert Keeper Why the Pick? YTD
The 19th Hole Matt Kuchar Hasn’t started for a couple of weeks, but he’s played well this season. Not to mention he has a solid short game and is good at keeping it in play…a necessity on a course like this. Avg Finish: 37th
Future of Fantasy Charl Schwartzel Charl in Charge has ten top 10 finishes in his last 11 tournaments. He’s as hot as they come. Avg Finish: 37th
Jake Gaer Freddie Jacobson Two top fives in three events in San Antonio. Course requires precision and a solid short game, Freddie can roll it with the best of ‘em Avg Finish: 26th

Sleepers

Expert Sleeper Why the Pick? YTD
The 19th Hole Justin Leonard I really wanted to pick Rory here and feel he should be an option but alas I cannot. So, I was going to default to my boy Horschel…but then I had this feeling about Justin…of course that could just be gas but what the heck. Avg Finish: 55th
Future of Fantasy Jordan Spieth Spieth has a scoring average of 69.46 over the past three months, in 26 rounds of golf. Playing four hours from home helps. Avg Finish: 47th
Jake Gaer Charley Hoffman 7 for 7 cuts made at this tournament, played well last week… As good a choice as any for a sleeper pick this week. Avg Finish: 46th
