Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections

It was nice to see Owen Daniels held up for 15 games last year, but he continued to battle through injuries, into the playoffs.

Matt Schaub is expected back from his foot injury, and that’s good news for Daniels, but because of his past health problems, he’s fallen out of the top ten tight ends in recent mock drafts. Look to Daniels as a low end TE1 or a solid backup TE2 on draft day.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

Want an example of why you can’t take a player too seriously when they say they feel great coming off a major injury? Look no further than Owen Daniels as the Texans tight end was on a terrific pace in the first half of the 2009 season but tore his ACL, eight weeks into the season. Coming into preseason, Daniels told those who asked him if he was feeling good that he was “great” which led to fantasy owners believing he could be a starter for their team.Not so fast, as Daniels struggled and after the season, he admitted the knee really was an issue, and that he was just covering up his concerns by telling everyone he was doing great.

This is just one reason why I tend to follow the rule that it takes a player until the second season after a torn ACL before they are ready to return to full health (or at least as good as they can be after a major injury) and that is why I believe Daniels is primed for a possible bounce back season in 2011.

Coming into the summer, Daniels ADP value on Mock Draft Central has him listed as the 11th best tight end (129.38 overall) going in standard redraft leagues. In ESPN’s standard league rankings, Daniels checks in as the 6th best tight end to select.

For the production Daniels had a season ago, I find his value to be truer on Mock Draft Central as you should acquire Daniels at a value, and ESPN seems to have him ranked as if he failed to have a down season last year. Daniels may very well perform as the 6th best tight end, but he’s a “value pick” because of a bad year and there’s not “sleeper value” in the 6th overall ranking.

2010 Preview

Owen Daniels was having a fantastic fantasy season until a week eight torn acl ruined his season. Unfortunately for Daniels he was in a contract year and the injury didn’t help him land a huge contract. Still he is back with the Texans and should still have a productive year coming of the nasty injury.

2010 Fantasy Football Outlook

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Owen Daniels was off to a hot pace in the first half of last year before he tore his ACL against the Buffalo Bills in week eight. Before the injury, Daniels was on pace for 80 receptions, over 1,000 yards receiving and ten touchdowns.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Daniels isn’t expected to participate in OTA workouts with the team but everything is looking good for him to return by the time camp opens up in July. Don’t expect Daniels to be a full strength until next year as it usually takes a player until their second season after an ACL injury to play at a top level.

Because of this we have Daniels as the 8th best fantasy tight end to take this year contrary to the top five talent that he truly is. Even though Daniels is recovering he should still be the teams’ starter, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes for 800 yards and six or seven touchdowns.

By next year, Daniels should be ready to be one of the better fantasy tight ends once again.
