How Far Does This Nanny State Thing Go?

It’s going to snow so much in Chicago that I will feel like I am living in New York, minus the whining.

Just got an email from Rahm Emmanuel.  Should I be touched that he has concern for my welfare that he sent me a blanket email to remind me of the snow?  Or, should I be offended that the Nanny State has to tell me to bundle up, turn the heat on, and be careful during a snowstorm?  I thought that’s what your parents were there for anyway.   When I was a kid, it’s not as if my mother sent me outside in flip flops and shorts to go sledding.

I am sure that Chico and the rest of them all sent out emails too.  I actually prefer what the current Mayor of Chicago said.  He said, “We live in Chicago, it snows.”.  Daley can be really direct and funny when he wants to.  You have to love that about him.  I agree with him, I cannot remember a winter in Chicago without snow.

This sort of Nanny State thing is alarming.  Did you know Janet Napalitano gave Obama a briefing to let him know we were ready for the snowstorm?  I was against the Patriot Act and the things Bush did to expand government bureaucracy because government agencies never stay within their bounds.  I thought Homeland Security meant stopping terrorism-not dealing with a snowstorm.  But, like every other budget hungry department of government that seeks to validate itself by encroaching on more and more territory, Homeland Security probably has budgeted for Black Snow Plows now.

Here is my plan.  I have pickled some vegetables.  I have gone out into the city wilderness and secured a supply of cured meats and cheeses.  I have stocked my refrigerator with wine.  We are hunkering down, and watching the blizzard.  Oh, and at 6:15 tomorrow evening, I will be at an Economic Club of Chicago black tie dinner to hear Mayor Daley speak.  Tux and black snow boots.  In Chicago, we’re tough.
