Unintended Consequences of Gay Marriage

Now that New York and Illinois have approved gay marriage, it probably won’t be long until California comes along and approves it. Can even a libertarian state like Texas be far behind?

This post is not delving into the religious and social issues of gay marriage. We just recognize that there is a lot of pent up demand and when demand outstrips supply, prices rise. You might call it “marriage inflation”.

Just some off the cuff thoughts on some economic consequences and societal shifts

1. The price of weddings ought to go up in the short term as demand for all the things you need at a wedding; place, cake, linens, invitations, goes up with the rise of gays getting hitched. Book early and avoid the rush. You might save some dollars too.

2. The line at the wedding registry counter just got longer.

3. A question? Will gay marriage party planners be straight?

4. If gay marriages turn out like straight marriages, the wedding boomlet ought to turn into a divorce boomlet. Divorce attorney

6. Honeymoon spots will get more expensive.
