On June 26 countless antiques, musical instruments and other objects made from ivory or decorated with it will be effectively banned by the federal government from sale or trade within the U.S. Coupled with tough new international import-export restrictions, the value of these objects, once in the hundreds of millions of dollars, will evaporate.

The FDA’s decision will not only harm American cheese makers, but may also bring a halt to the importation of artisan cheeses from abroad as Canadian and European Union regulators have not imposed such draconian measures and still allow for the use of wood boards to age cheese. Rob Ralyea of Cornell University’s Department of Food Science, commenting on the FDA’s action noted “the great majority of cheeses imported to this country are in fact aged on wooden boards and some are required to be aged on wood by their standard of identity (Comte, Beaufort and Reblochon, to name a few). Therefore, it will be interesting to see how these specific cheeses will be dealt with when it comes to importation into the United States.”

The result of this structure is a two-tier internet: a minimum level of access that ISPs cannot degrade, and a premium lane with plenty of flexibility for deal making. The FCC appears to assume that the “minimum level of access” will remain a vibrant space for innovation and communication. Unfortunately, this assumption is flawed.

The IRS targeted conservative groups for audit, with the complicity of the White House, lied about it in front of a Congressional committee and then expects the American public to believe that they “lost” the emails.

The idea was that cattle farts were creating global warming to some extent. Well, now the EPA is setting the stage to reduce methane emissions by cattle in the dairy sector in the US by 25%. Never mind that our overall cattle levels are at 1951 levels. Never mind that the number of dairy farms fell by 52,000 from 1997 to 2007. Evidently we need more destruction of those who would actually try to feed us good quality food that isn’t factory produced. Smaller diversified farming is better for the land, farmers, consumers and the economy. It’s also better for food security, distribution and civilization overall…But those who want us off the land and easily controlled want to regulate cow flatulence.

All of these instances show the over reach and how out of touch the bureaucracy is when it comes to infringing on the lives of free loving Americans.  All of them.  They are dunderhead rules written in cubicles and debated in a vacuum.

In each instance, they are trying to solve a problem but doing it in the wrong way.  It’s like using a Twitter hashtag to chastise ISIS while they are on the march in Iraq.  The only way to solve problems that they are trying to solve is through implementation of classical economic theory based in Coase Theorem, alongside actual science utilizing an unbiased scientific method.

That’s not possible in big government, and exactly why we need to get rid of it and transfer freedom back to American citizens.
