Watching College Football

If you watched the championship games yesterday, you didn’t see a lot of defense.  A couple of points stuck out to me.

1.  Ohio State rolled against Wisconsin 59-0 with a third string QB.  It shows that the Big Ten is the most atrocious of all the major conferences.  Vandy might be bowl eligible in the Big Ten.  It also tells me that the spread offense is more of a system than it is offense.  Because the QB isn’t tasked with the same sorts of reads that a classic NFL QB is tasked with, more people can play the position.  It’s difficult to stop, unless you have a lot of speed at every position.  In college, that’s just not the case even with the best teams.  The spread doesn’t work as well in the NFL unless you have a very talented NFL type QB.  Defenses in the NFL also are a hundred times faster than college.  Everyone can get sideline to sideline to stop it.

2.  I was watching a bit of the Georgia Tech/FSU track meet which FSU won by 2 points.  As I watched GT roll through FSU’s defense, I thought, “Why don’t they go for 2 after every touchdown?”.  I think they would have had a 50/50 shot at minimum of converting.  If the probability was actually better than that and they did it, GT would have won the game.

There will be a lot of acrimony on some college campuses tonight.  But if I were the committee my final four would be FSU, Alabama, Oregon, and either Baylor or TCU.  Really doesn’t matter between the last two.  Baylor won at home on a head to head.  Both teams had glaring losses.   It’s a crapshoot as to who will win it all, but my gut tells me Oregon.  Hard to compare because Alabama played the toughest schedule coming out of the SEC West.
