BioLargo Water demos its advanced oxidation system to treat captured stormwater in Southern California

BioLargo Inc (OTCQB:BLGO) said Wednesday that its Canadian subsidiary BioLargo Water Inc has kicked off a pre-commercial demo of the company’s Advanced Oxidation System (AOS) to treat captured stormwater in Southern California.

In a statement, the Westminster, California-based company said the goal in the pilot phase is to show the technical and economic practicality of deploying BioLargo’s AOS technology to treat stormwater and reuse it in the United States and Canada.

BioLargo’s AOS technology combines highly energized iodine molecules with cutting-edge filtration materials to destroy bacteria and dismantle soluble organic contaminants.

The pilot project is partly funded by the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program which is providing $189,000. 

BioLargo Water will collaborate on the project with Richard Watson & Associates Inc and Carollo Engineers Inc. Richard Watson is involved in stormwater quality management and is a consultant to three watershed management groups in Los Angeles County. Similarly, Carollo Engineers is an expert on providing water treatment solutions.

“This pre-commercial demonstration pilot represents a pivotal moment for our company and for AOS technology,” said Dr Richard Smith, president at BioLargo Water.   

“It’s an opportunity to show the world that AOS can provide high-performance and cost-effective treatment of captured stormwater, and play a big role in the $4 billion stormwater use market.”

Stormwater reuse 

The company said the goal of the pilot program was to focus on the potential of using the AOS technology to “treat captured stormwater to water reuse standards.”

The pilot project will also help establish the costs for AOS technology, which is a crucial step before customers can consider adopting the technology in a more industrial setting.

The company said BioLargo is conducting three pre-commercial pilots for its AOS technology – in a poultry processing wastewater pilot in Northern Alberta, Canada; a brewery wastewater pilot in Southern California; and the stormwater pilot project at the firm’s Westminster, California facility.

All three pilot projects represent a big step towards commercialization, as they will generate the much-needed technical and economic data needed for the technology’s quick adoption.

BioLargo CEO Dennis Calvert noted that stormwater treatment and use is a key water management market in the United States, particularly in California.

“Voters in Los Angeles County passed ‘Measure W’ to provide $300 million annually to pay for projects, infrastructure, and programs to capture, treat, and use stormwater and urban runoff,” said Calvert.

“BioLargo is eager to demonstrate that AOS technology is capable of helping solve challenges in this area.”

BioLargo Inc incubates disruptive technologies and has three platforms that it has built over the last decade. It has invested nearly $22 million into clean air, clean water and advanced health care technologies.
