MGX Minerals reveals encouraging results from research collaboration

MGX Minerals Inc (CSE:XMG) (OTCPINK:MGXMF) said it has completed a collaborative project looking at the long-term stability of nanostructure silicon fabricated from low-cost metallurgical-grade silicon.

The results showed that nanostructured silicon with a specialized surface coating maintained a reversible capacity of 607.5 mAh g-1 (milliampere hours per gram) at a current density of 2A g-1 for 1,000 battery cycles.

Traditional lithium-ion batteries have a life expectancy of between 500 and 1,500 cycles.

The research is being conducted in collaboration with the University of British Columbia, led by Dr Jian Liu. The goal of the two-year research program is to develop a low-cost and scalable method to fabricate a silicon-based anode, improving the energy density of lithium-ion batteries.

Vancouver-based MGX has three silicon projects in southeastern British Columbia.

MGX and UBC are developing a highly efficient, long-lasting silicon anode for next generation lithium-ion batteries capable of doubling the current energy density of batteries for use in long-range electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage.

The project uses low-cost metallurgical-grade silicon as a feedstock to fabricate nanostructured silicon.

A patent application is currently being prepared and the partnership has begun discussions for commercialization and manufacturing of the technology.
