Post Trump Trump

Been watching the whirlwind of politics a bit.  The Democrats have gotten more strident.  Swinging even further to the left in their statements.  I think the NYC mayoral election is an outlier.  I don’t think the NYC mayor will have success bringing true Guiliani “law and order” to NYC.

Democrats have their own issues.  As an Illinoisian, it is no surprise to me that Democrats don’t give a hoot about the corruption in the Biden administration.  They haven’t in Illinois for over 50 years.  Can you imagine one of the Trump children selling their “art” in a private sale?

Watching post-President Trump is interesting only to see the response.   It’s not a surprise that he is taking a high profile unlike every President until Obama.  Obama has kept a high profile since leaving office and he is the first president to really actively do that.  Given who Obama was, and what he thought he was about it is no surprise.

Democrats still viscerally hate Trump.  No surprise there.  All you have to do is go on Twitter to see.  Anything that is related to Trump or Peter Thiel at all is roundly chastised by the chattering class. The GOP establishment is taking a deep breath and trying to re-establish control over the party.  I don’t think that happens. They are dinosaurs and good riddance to them.  It’s also no surprise that a large percentage of people who voted for Trump want him to run again.

I think that is a mistake.

Trump did something very good and someday maybe even the chattering class will thank him.  He got everyone to unmask themselves.  Everyone, including the Republicans.  We know where the pieces of the puzzle stand now.  Journalists who are really not journalists, Big Tech, executives, government agencies, and politicians from all stripes showed their true colors. But, Trump with his bellicose nature wasn’t able to dismantle it.  I remember reading about the “Deep State” in 2015, and we saw its real effects during the Trump administration.

Trump was a private executive.  Private executives can be singular forces inside their private companies because they can get rid of you if you aren’t on board with their goals. You can’t do that in government.  You have to artfully build coalitions and cultivate change.

Trump ran his administration like a private executive would have.  They demand loyalty.  They try things and fail and swerve quickly.  While the press railed about people leaving the Trump administration and tried to make a big deal about it, I wasn’t concerned.  He was learning and building a team and when you do that with the high stakes they were playing, getting rid of people who didn’t fit quickly was part of the deal.

It didn’t surprise me that Trump played very well with blue-collar people.  He was used to dealing with them as a commercial real estate guy, but frankly, I think he enjoys their company.  I don’t think it’s an act.  I suspect he dreads the elite “Hampton’s class”.   I noticed he doesn’t own a home there and doesn’t go for the “season” like most of the wealthy in NYC.

For all his personal talk about “Scranton Joe”, I don’t think he identifies with the middle class at all.  I think he’s happy to be rid of it.

That brings us to 2022 and 2024.

In states that Republicans really dominate, they can’t nominate wishy-washy RINO Republicans.  No more Romney’s or Murkowski’s.  Their day is done.  It’s worth remembering we still have Obamacare because of John McCain.  In some states that might play, Maine for example.  But, for the most part, Republicans ought to nominate plain-spoken conservatives that can easily say they are against transgender bathrooms and critical race theory as easily as they can say they are for cutting taxes and smaller government.  The ones that don’t seem to enjoy the growth of government and never taper it.  In my home state of Illinois, wishy-washy Republicans can’t win elections.  But neither can outspoken social conservative first candidates like Jeannie Ives.  There is a balance and it’s delicate.

Republicans can take back the House and Senate in 2022, and set the stage for a brawl in 2024.  We truly are fighting for the future of a democratic republic.  Either we are going to continue down the path to the way Europe governs, or we go back to small independent governing where people are more free.  We know the gray area way we have been governing doesn’t hold.

For 2024, what the Republicans need to do is nominate a person that is similar to Trump in their distaste for the bureaucratic estate and career politicians along with elite non-government organizations running the country, that also has a knack for the government.   It’s going to be someone that has been in government a while, and has been an executive–>so not a Representative or Senator.

Right now, it looks to be Florida Governor Ron DeSantis but he is not the only one.
