Return to Invoice Cover in Car Insurance and Why New Car Buyers Should Never Skip It

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The Gap Between IDV and Invoice That Most Buyers Miss

When a new car is insured under a standard comprehensive policy, the maximum settlement in case of heft or total loss is the IDV — the current market value, which includes depreciation. After two years, a Rs 12 lakh car might have an IDV of Rs 9.5 lakh. A theft settlement would be Rs 9.5 lakh, not Rs 12 lakh. Return to invoice cover closes this Rs 2.5 lakh gap by extending the settlement to the original invoice price. For a new car, this gap is widest in the first two to three years — exactly when theft risk is also highest, given the premium value of new vehicles to thieves.

What Return to Invoice Cover Actually Provides
Return to invoice in car insurance means that in a theft or total loss scenario, the insurer pays the original purchase price of the vehicle as shown on the dealer invoice, rather than the depreciated IDV. The settlement includes the ex-showroom price, registration charges, and road tax — the full amount the owner paid to put the car on the road. This is the maximum possible settlement and leaves no gap
between what was paid for the car and what the insurance returns. For financed vehicles where the
outstanding loan may be close to the original purchase price, RTI ensures the settlement covers the loan entirely rather than leaving a residual balance.

Return to Invoice vs Zero Depreciation: Different Scenarios

These two add-ons address different claim scenarios. Return to invoice applies in total loss and theft
claims — relatively infrequent but financially the largest single-event losses. Zero depreciation applies in
partial damage claims — the most frequent claim type — by eliminating depreciation deductions on
replaced parts. Both add-ons together provide the most complete protection for a new car. Zero dep
protects against the depreciation gap in every partial claim; RTI protects against the invoice-to-IDV gap in the worst-case total loss or theft scenario. Together, the additional annual premium is Rs 2,000 to Rs
7,000 — modest relative to the protection they provide.

When Return to Invoice Cover Is Worth Buying
Return to invoice cover is most valuable in the first two to three years of a new car’s ownership, when the gap between the original invoice price and the depreciated IDV is largest. After three years, the IDV may have fallen to 60 to 65 percent of the purchase price — a Rs 4 to 5 lakh gap on a Rs 12 lakh car. After five to six years, the gap narrows as both the IDV and reasonable market value converge. RTI is also most financially critical for financed vehicles: when the loan balance exceeds the IDV, without RTI the theft settlement goes entirely to the financier and the owner receives nothing while potentially still owing abalance on a car they no longer have. and

comprehensive vs zero dep

Conclusion
Return to invoice cover in car insurance is a modest-premium, high-value add-on that every new car
buyer should include in their comprehensive policy for the first two to three years of ownership. The gap
between invoice price and IDV that standard comprehensive coverage leaves open is widest exactly
when the car is newest, most valuable, and most attractive to thieves. RTI closes this gap completely. Forfinanced vehicles, it is not just valuable — it is essential to ensure the theft settlement covers the
outstanding loan rather than leaving the owner doubly disadvantaged.
