New Research: Picks and Shovels #3 — BESS & Its Bottlenecks
As previously communicated, we’re continuing to share select higher-conviction ideas and research from my Cliff Notes Substack with GeoInvesting subscribers, alongside our regular research updates and additional deep-dive work. These pieces are part of our ongoing research process and complement the ideas and coverage we share with our current GeoInvesting subscribers.
The latest piece, “Picks and Shovels #3: Battery Energy Storage Systems and Their Bottlenecks,” takes a closer look at the rapidly expanding BESS market and, more importantly, where the economics and bottlenecks actually sit across the value chain.
This is relevant to your investing because we recently initiated a BESS stock screen, where we added Core Molding Technologies Inc (NYSE:CMT), Richardson Electronics, Ltd. (NASDAQ:RELL) and Bimergen Energy Corporation (NYSE:BESS).
Rather than focusing solely on battery manufacturers, the research report examines upstream materials and cells, system integrators, the software and optimization layer, and downstream developers, while highlighting constraints around grid interconnections, transformers, switchgear, tariffs, and domestic sourcing.
The key takeaway is that BESS growth does not necessarily mean every battery-related company will benefit equally. Some of the more attractive positions may sit with developer-owners controlling scarce grid access and contracted revenue, as well as manufacturers of transformers, switchgear and other electrical equipment where shortages can delay entire projects and create pricing power.
Among the higher-impact stocks highlighted in the report are Powell Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:POWL), Valmont Industries, Inc. (NYSE:VMI), Preformed Line Products Company (NASDAQ:PLPC), Myr Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:MYRG), and Azz Inc. (NYSE:AZZ). These five U.S.-listed companies were specifically ranked as bottleneck plays tied to the electrical infrastructure required for BESS, grid expansion and data centers. Powell was highlighted for switchgear and substation integration, Valmont for transmission and substation structures, PLPC for grid connection hardware, MYR Group for its scarce transmission-and-distribution workforce, and AZZ for its domestic galvanizing network.
This follows the previously shared Picks and Shovels research on the U.S. pharmaceutical reshoring theme. Parts 1 and 2 examined the roughly $500 billion wave of announced pharma manufacturing commitments, the suppliers positioned to benefit from the construction of new U.S. facilities, and importantly, the timing of when that spending may begin flowing through to equipment and process-technology companies. The theme remains an area of ongoing research as the reshoring cycle develops and companies begin converting announced investments into actual orders.
