If Not Now, When?
Not Now: The Procrastinator’s Manual by Benjamin English explores one of my favorite things: not doing stuff on time. Presented as a primer for practitioners of procrastination, the new pocket-sized paperback from Princeton Architectural Press, is chock full of beautifully-illustrated tips on how to do a much better job of wasting time. The funny timing here, is of course, the fact that a significant section of our planet is currently on Coronavirus lockdown, and therefore, many of us are presumably prime candidates for taking on bold new hobbies. Perfect timing. Illustrating something of an Old School lean, English’s concern is partly that “procrastination has become too easy,” and so this title hearkens back to a pre-internet pre-smartphone era – you know, the good old days, when keeping yourself idle took some actual skill and effort. Any serious procrastinator will appreciate the way the book is arranged – with relatively easy distractions up front, such as “Brood,” and more advanced forms of killing time listed towards the back, such as “Vacuum your entire house with only the hose attachment.” The final stage of not now-ing is to memorize Pi up to about 160 decimal places. So, what are you waiting for?
