100 Posters
If you’d like to see and learn the history of high impact visual design, check out 100 Posters that changed the world by Colin Slater. It’s fresh out from Pavilion books (and is distributed by Rizzoli New York in the US). Slater is an Edinburgh-based author who has written several books about things that have changed the world, so he’s something of an expert when it comes to this sort of stuff. Indeed, his latest book takes an in-depth look at a wide range of posters, in chronological order, starting with wanted posters, anti-slavery posters, and Hokusai’s famous woodblock prints, telling a visual story of the next 150 years or so, loaded with historical facts and context to match. It covers topics from ’30s advertising, World War II propaganda, vintage travel posters, and soda ads, right through to posters from the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam war posters, the movie poster for Jaws, AIDS awareness communications, President Obama’s Hope and Change posters designed by Shepard Fairey, and print ads for the hit musical Hamilton too. The scope of posters shown and explained here is nothing short of impressive. It’s interesting and informative, and when it comes to graphic design inspo, it really doesn’t get much better than this handy hardcover. 7-1/3 x 9-1/8 inches, 224 pages.
