Weird Food of the Week: World’s Most Expensive Ice Cream

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Have too much money on your hands?  Looking for a way to blow some of it?  Feeling hungry?  If you can answer “yes” to all of the above questions, the Golden Opulence Sundae may be the dessert for you.

You can get it at New York City’s famous restaurant Serendipity 3.  You’ll have to order it 48 hours in advance, and it costs $1,000, but of course that’s mere pennies to you (assuming you answered “yes” to the three questions above).

The Golden Opulence Sundae once broke the Guinness World Record for the world’s most expensive sundae.  It consists of several scoops of Tahitian vanilla ice cream served in a crystal goblet lined with edible gold leaf.  Each scoop of ice cream is also covered in its own sheet of gold leaf.  It’s topped with pieces of rare chocolate from Venezuela and drizzled with Amedei Porceleana, the most expensive kind of chocolate in the world.

They decorate the sundae with gold-coated candies, candied fruits from Paris, and truffles (the rare and expensive fungi, not the melt-in-your-mouth chocolates).  Instead of a maraschino cherry, they top it with a small bowl of dessert caviar and a golden flower made of sugar.

In all, the dessert contains 2g of gold.  When you’ve eaten it all and brushed the gold dust from your lips, you get to keep the crystal goblet.

Still not expensive enough for you?  The Golden Opulence Sundae is cheap compared to the Frrrozen Haute Chocolote, another Serendipity 3 creation which would set you back $25,000.  That one is made of 28 different kinds of rare cocoa, more edible gold, and more truffles, and it comes with a diamond bracelet and a bejeweled spoon.

This is not to be confused with the restaurant’s famous Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, which costs $8.95 according to their online menu.
