How Boston’s Fenway Park transformed its roof into a garden

Linda Pizzuti Henry, a co-owner of the Red Sox and wife of team owner John Henry, had a vision in 2014 — she wanted to put a garden on the roof of Fenway Park.

The 100-year-old ballpark is the oldest in the country, and it has seen a number of small-scale improvements since Henry acquired the team in 2002. But a garden on the roof was a new challenge.

“The folks at Fenway weren’t sure how to take it,” Pizzuti Henry wrote on an Instagram post of the venture.

But partnering with Green City Growers of Somerville, Fenway Sports Group was able to create the garden on 5,000-square-feet of roof on the third-base side of the EMC level.

Five years later, the Fenway Farms garden has produced 6,000 pounds of produce annually, and has been expanded to a new entertainment deck that has produced hundreds of pounds of produce for shelters throughout Boston. Partnering with food vendor Aramark, the park has also used the produce in meals sold to fans.
