A community garden in Court Hey Park has been torched in a “heartbreaking” arson attack.

The Incredible Edible Knowsley garden has been targeted by vandals over the last six weeks, but on Sunday night the petty incidents escalated to arson with youths apparently setting fire to part of the site.

In a post on Facebook, the team behind the garden said: “This is heartbreaking to see. We have worked so hard on this site as we want to get it ready for the community to use.

“Our volunteers since being on site since the end of August have put in over 1020 hours of time, only to see that these young people have not had any thought to that and destroyed all their work.”

As well as setting fire to an outside pizza oven and some benches, the vandals slashed polytunnels with knives and broke plant pots and fencing.
