USDA issues public health alert regarding certain HyVee enchiladas in 8 states

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Some HyVee brand chicken enchiladas are the subject to a public health alert from the USDA because of misbranding.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection (FSIS) reports that the misbranded product’s label does not declare soy as an ingredient as required be federal regulations. Soy is one of seven substances considered major allergens, and thus must be specifically declared on product labels.

Government officials did not seek a recall of the 43 pounds of implicated products “because the chicken enchilada products are no longer available in commerce,” according to the public alert posted by the FSIS. The specific product subject to the alert is not-ready-to-eat (NRTE), heat treated, and not fully cooked.

“The problem was discovered when a HyVee retail store employee identified the labeling issue and reported it to the establishment,” the recall notice states.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers with food allergies who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.”

The implicated enchiladas were made on Jan. 3.

Consumers can use the following information to determine whether they have the implicated products in their homes:

  • “HyVee mealtime CHICKEN ENCHILADAS”
  • 62.4-oz. (3-lbs. 14.4-oz.)
  • Lot code “21003”
  • “Best If Use By: 01/10/2021” date
  • Establishment number “P51558” inside the USDA mark of inspection

HyVee reports distributing the chicken enchiladas to retail stores in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
