Community freezers, gardens, and greenhouses being used to combat food insecurity in NunatuKavut

PORT HOPE SIMPSON, N.L. — Roxanne Notley knows all too well about food insecurity in Labrador.

Notley lives in the small community of Port Hope Simpson.

“Years ago, in NunatuKavut, people were very self-reliant, and they didn’t depend on stores or trucks to bring food in,” she said.

“In the past years, more people, especially younger families, are used to being able to just to go to the store and get those things. But it’s becoming very costly. Not everybody does have the ability to go and get every meal at the store.”

Smee says community gardens are another tool to improve food security.

“We hear all the time about communities moving into community gardening. They connect people with their food in a more direct way, but for folks in communities where fresh food is a real challenge, they do have a have a big role to play, and it’s very much possible to grow food in northern communities,” says Smee.

Smee says successful projects can be seen across the province, especially in Labrador.
