There is an employment program run in partnership with the Victorian College for the Deaf, providing work experience opportunities for those with hearing disabilities.
Called “Hear Me, See Me, Employ Me”, it offers internship placements for high school children with hearing issues. Two recent graduates are now employed as paid maintenance gardeners at the community garden.
With the help of an interpreter, graduates Anak Wisnu and Mustafa Omar tell Costa what they enjoy about the job.
The students learn about irrigation, setting up a garden plot, looking after the soil, as well as the different crops they grow and protecting them from pests.
Whether graduates plan to stay in gardening or not, the program offers students a break to get their first job, learn basic employment skills – turning up on time, getting on with others – and build self confidence.
The produce grown at the garden goes to food insecurity programs that is then given away or sold for a gold-coin donation.
