Leftover suitcases have accumulated at a rate of about one to two a month. These include ones that became damaged and owners couldn’t repair them and older ones that were replaced while in the country.

Excerpt:

TOKYO — Foreign visitors to Japan numbered over 3 million in both March and April this year, the Japan National Tourism Organization announced on May 15. With the increase, hoteliers have been puzzled over what to do with the large number of disused suitcases left behind by guests, but one hotel has found an innovative solution.

Mini tomatoes are seen growing at the Hotel Niwa Tokyo in the capital’s Chiyoda Ward on June 23, 2023, using a suitcase left behind by a guest as a planter, in this photo provided by the hotel.
“Here’s some lemongrass, spearmint, etc. They can go into herbal teas. Here we have rosemary. It’ll go with some fried meat.”

This is at the Hotel Niwa Tokyo, located about 200 meters southeast of JR Suidobashi Station, and full of verdant gardens. General Manager Satoshi Ebinuma led this Mainichi Shimbun reporter around the food-growing garden on the hotel’s roof. Herbs, vegetables and other things are being grown here without the use of fertilizers, and used in dishes served to guests at the hotel’s restaurant. The distinctive aspect is that suitcases left discarded by foreign visitors are being used as planters.
