Artists are driven to tell stories, but you can’t eat stories, and this grant recognizes our contribution to building communities and enables those of us working on the short film to be paid for our expertise and contribution.
In addition to producing food, community gardens serve Queens and NYC in too many ways to count including providing an escape from summer heat, peaceful connection with nature, a haven for birds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators, and providing porous soil which mitigates flooding.
Two Coves is a microcosm of Queens and teaches gardeners and volunteers to navigate working with people they may never meet in their other activities. It is a de-stressor, a mediation, and in places like the UK doctors often prescribe gardening as a therapy for physical and mental health issues, not to mention the benefits of gentle, low impact exercise, and time spent outdoors.
This grant enables gardeners at Two Coves to share their knowledge, wisdom, and the benefits they draw from their relationship with their own food and with nature. It allows filmmakers to amplify the practice of gardening as a meditation and vehicle for finding peace and harmony in a tumultuous time. “Urban Garden” will have a free public screening at one of Two Coves Community Garden’s series of “BBQ and Movie” nights.
