Twin Towers urban farm fights food insecurity, grows community leaders

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — In the heart of Dayton’s Twin Towers neighborhood, a once-neglected stretch of land has been transformed into a hub of growth and opportunity thanks to the work of the Mission of Mary Cooperative.
The nonprofit has turned five acres of previously vacant land into a flourishing urban farm that provides fresh produce to the community while addressing the root causes of food insecurity.
“By taking five acres of vacant land that had a lot of dumping and illicit activity… we beautified it,” said Michael Schulz, executive director of Mission of Mary. “We grew food beyond our own needs for the community.”
That effort is making a significant impact in an area that was once considered a food desert. But the organization’s education and outreach coordinator, Dan Lombardo, said a different term is more accurate.
“The terminology that we’re using now is food apartheid, because just like the apartheid you heard about in South Africa in the 1990s,” said Lombardo. “This is based on race. It is based on class.”
The cooperative grows up to 120 types of produce, but its focus extends beyond the harvest. Through greenhouse programs in schools and preschools, the organization is also investing in the next generation.
“Before those little kids even go into the working world or even into first grade, they’ve got more food security than most adults do,” Lombardo said. “They already know how to grow their own food.”
