A Penticton couple has been denied a permit to operate a personal-use rabbit farm in a residential area.
The couple, whose names were not mentioned during the meeting and are not featured in council documents, had requested council allow them to raise rabbits for family slaughter and consumption at their home at 1482 Columbia Street.
The couple addressed council at Tuesday’s meeting, attempting to make it clear this would be a fully indoor, low-impact situation, and “not a commercial operation” and that the animals would be treated humanely.
They said, in summation, they are just trying to live more sustainably while also living within City of Penticton boundaries.
They argued urban livestock is already allowed, as evidenced by backyard chickens, and that private butchering is also allowed. They requested a temporary use permit to have their property designated for agricultural usage, in this case for livestock.
City staff had some qualms.
In a report presented to council, city planner Gabe Tamminga recommended denying the request.
The Columbia Street couple already have a few rabbits, which they referred to as pets in their presentation, and have attracted the attention of city animal control and the BC SPCA in the past. The couple claimed Tuesday that now they have worked closely with the SPCA and are in compliance with the rights of their animals.
