The rooftop of Mukesh Vaswani’s house in Mansarovar, Jaipur, is no less than a farm scene. When the team reached his rooftop, large grow bags and containers were filled with flourishing okra, eggplant, pumpkin, tomatoes, chillies, and various green vegetables.
Despite the intense heat, the greenery on the rooftop made the temperature feel relatively cooler. This was not just an experiment in growing vegetables, but a model to combat rising heat that was also helping to naturally cool the house.
Mukesh Vaswani explains that until a year ago, his rooftop would also heat up during the summer. It would become difficult to stand on the roof during the afternoon hours, and the rooms in the house would remain hot until late at night.
But after starting rooftop farming, the situation has changed. Now with a layer of soil, plants, and vegetables on the roof, sunlight doesn’t fall directly on the concrete, and the temperature inside the house remains lower compared to before.
