$1.5M farm project to offer hands-on learning for Raleigh students
The two-acre plot of land behind Star Academy Charter School has been given a new life and transformed into a living learning farm known as Urban Roots of Tennessee.

“We built this farm because we understand that we can’t simply prepare our students to pass standardized tests, but we have to teach them how they can compete in these increasingly globalized and automated communities,” said Dr. Stephens.
Organizers say the program focuses on students in pre-K through 8th grade and provides them with real-world, hands-on experiences.
“We have a lot of big things going on, like a freshwater eco pond, a greenhouse, a pollinator garden, and learning garden beds as well. We also have a year-round greenhouse,” said Madilyn Hunter, the agriculture advisor.
Additionally, they want the student-driven urban agriculture initiative to be a driving force in the community, promoting sustainable growth and empowering the next generation of leaders.
“I just want everybody to know what’s going on and know that it’s going to be a positive movement going on,” said Marquez Sanders, an 8th grader.
Organizers say this is not the finish line but the first planting as there is still plenty of work that needs to be done.
