Growing produce locally helps residents have reliable access to nutritious, affordable food, as well as have agency over and participation in the food production process.
Flemo Farm and Malvern Urban Farm are part of a pilot project in Toronto to grow food in hydro corridors, especially in neighbourhoods that face high unemployment and low food access.
There are other models of urban farming in the city, including on privately owned land behind residential buildings. Thorncliffe Park Urban Farmers provides a blueprint.
On a chilly May morning, Ayn Regalado weeds three plant beds under the high-voltage towers of Toronto’s hydro corridor in Flemingdon Park.
Regalado is preparing the soil to be planted with seedlings she’d been nurturing in her apartment. She’s particularly excited about saluyot, a leafy plant popular for stews in the Philippines (also called mulukhiyah in the Arab world). It’s one of those comforting dishes Regalado remembers her mother making her back home. In Toronto, she never finds saluyot in grocery aisles; it’s only ever in the frozen veggie section, and doesn’t taste as good.
