A group of Detroit urban farmers bought a 9,000-square-foot former grocery store. They have a $10 million plan to convert it into a solar-powered community food and resilience center.

This property marks the first of several food resiliency hubs that Detroit Food LOOP intends to create. The goal is to give residents more control over their own food systems. Oakland Avenue Urban Farm, Cadillac Gardens, Feedom Freedom Farms, Sacred Spaces, Beaverland Farms, Detroit Food Policy Council, and Community Connections founded the collective and are working with the City of Detroit Office of Sustainability.
Jerry Ann Hebron serves as executive director of Northend Christian Community Development Corporation and Oakland Avenue Urban Farm. She said the center addresses a gap in local food systems. “Food sovereignty is not so much about access; it’s more about the power, and that’s the gap that this project fills,” Hebron said to Bridge Detroit.
