How can surplus food be redistributed for humans or animals?

RUAF invites contributions to the next issue of Urban Agriculture Magazine (UAM43) on the theme of food loss and waste in city region food systems.
The magazine will be published in March 2027, in partnership with CGIAR Food Frontiers and Security, the FAO-RUAF City Region Food Systems programme, Urban Futures, and EStà – Economia e Sostenibilità.
Food loss and waste (FLW) is a major barrier to efficient, sustainable and resilient food systems. FLW worsens food insecurity, erodes livelihoods, wastes natural resources and causes 10% of food system-derived GHG emissions. Huge volumes of FLW occur in cities and city regions, and across the value chains that link rural, peri-urban and urban areas. FLW in value chains is exacerbated by shocks and stresses affecting the food system, including climate events, geopolitical instability and pandemics.
Several initiatives are working to address FLW at the city region level, identifying hot spots, raising awareness, and developing policies and practical interventions to address them. These include testing and scaling innovative and accessible solutions – from on-farm storage, to processing, composting, circular nutrient recycling, consumer education and more.
Urban Agriculture Magazine aims to bridge research, policy and practice. UAM43 will highlight the challenges of FLW in city regions in different geographies, and showcase the state of the art in FLW prevention and management in and around cities. It will enable exchange of knowledge and experiences, inspiring stakeholders with approaches that could be adopted or adapted for their own city regions.
UAM43 will explore the following questions:
? How can FLW be measured at city region level and across rural-urban value chains?
? What are the FLW hotspots, and why do they occur?
? What are the barriers to integrated FLW management in value chains?
? What policies have been implemented to address FLW at the city or regional level? What are the enablers, barriers and impacts?
? What practical interventions have been implemented to prevent losses?
? How can surplus food be redistributed for humans or animals?
? How can FLW support the circular bioeconomy?
? How can citizens participate in measuring and addressing FLW?
? What is the potential of digital tools?
We are seeking diverse global perspectives from across research, policy and practice.
Proposals should be up to 250 words and include an outline and take-away messages. Please indicate proposed length of final article, if accepted (700, 1200, or 1800 words). Please send your proposal to [email protected] with subject ‘UAM43’.
Deadline for proposals is 12 October 2026, with selection by 26th October. Final articles are due by 7th December 2026.
