Green Street Farms combines fish and vegetables in a hybrid system that integrates a commercial recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) with aquaponics. In this setup, fish waste provides nutrients for plants, although balancing both systems commercially is highly complex. By combining the two technologies, Dass said the farm is able to maintain better water quality, creating a healthier environment for the fish.
He said conventional freshwater fish farming in ponds often lacks proper filtration and water circulation, which can affect the fish’s taste. That is why many people associate freshwater fish with a muddy or fishy flavour.
“We took that idea and developed a high-tech farm to ensure the water quality is properly maintained. That’s why our fish tastes very good,” Dass said.
Green Street Farms also began producing its own fish feed after laboratory tests found that some commercial feed did not match its stated nutritional content. By controlling the ingredients and nutrients, the farm keeps its fish healthier, a move Dass described as a game changer for the business.
“So, some of the ingredients include corn, soy, barley, nutrients, vitamins and fish oil. So, we buy all the raw material and then we make it into fish feed. We have all the equipment here,” he said.
