Coronavirus Fears Lift USD to Three-Year High as Trump Claims US is Ready to Tackle the Disease
The US dollar index rose to a three-year high as investors move their money into the safe-haven greenback due to worries about the global coronavirus outbreak. Investors are favouring USD as it has less trade links with China than the other significant safe havens like JPY. Investments considered safe in times of market turmoil have been rallying since the outbreak became Wall Street’s number one worry in January. Cases continue to rise globally, with a new confirmed case springing up in California this week. The full financial and economic cost of the outbreak is incalculable and thus has led to mass panic in the markets. But the United States, as well as dollar-denominated assets, are considered to be somewhat shielded from the outbreak’s impact, as President Trump primes the nation for the onslaught of the virus.
USD favoured over other safe havens during COVID-19 panic
America’s economy is less reliant on trade and exports than its peers. That means the expected slowing of China’s economic growth in the first quarter will hurt the United States less than it will other countries. Investors have noted that USD is their preferred choice as other safe havens like the Swiss Franc and Japanese Yen have significantly more ties with China which will see their economies falter more so than the United States’.
Meanwhile, the US economy has been going strong and is in its longest expansion in history. The Atlanta Federal Reserve’s GDPNow model predicts that US growth will accelerate to 2.6% in Q1 2020. With a tight labour market and modestly rising wages, the American consumer, who is the backbone of the US economy, is in a good place as it stands.
President Trump prepares the US for the oncoming coronavirus threat
With the first coronavirus case confirmed in the United States, the US President Donald Trump spoke on the matter, noting that the United States is ‘very, very prepared’ to deal with the coronavirus. He also stated that Vice President Mike Pence would oversee the American response to the global threat. Trump mentioned that the spreading of the disease through the US isn’t inevitable. He said the US may restrict travel to Italy, South Korea and other countries as a result of the virus but deemed as the wrong time to do so.
With many currencies declining during the global crisis, the US dollar certainly appears to be one of the best performers, almost thriving under the conditions. USD investors will hope that the currency can see this through, and should the nation be faced with an outbreak, be able to manage it as confidently as President Trump describes.

How can anyone believe the flu is a real threat when our borders are still wide open.
The government obviously doesn’t give a damn about the thousands who die of south american flu strains that sneak across our borders every year by the God only knows how many tens or hundreds of thousands, or maybe millions that thousands die from, but yet we are supposed to worry about a flu halfway across the planet?
Do the math. If there was any real threat to us our borders would be locked down like the Berlin wall.
I am not the least worried about a flu bug coming from China. I am, however, a bit concerned about all the diseases and vermin that can easily come into the country in the hoards who invade us.
