Master Your CNC Machine Like a Pro
CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines are used to produce prototypes out of digital software files. These tools generally work by transforming solid blocks into finished products. This is achieved through a controlled removal process of the material from the solid block. These machines have been used from the 1940s up to date.
Being able to use computer programs to control how machines work has made it possible to increase manufacturing productivity by increasing the efficiency of various processes. This makes it easier and faster to make products since the laborious and technical processes have been simplified. It is also important that you understand the tool you are using so that you can make the best use of it.
How it works
The CNC machine is a computer where software is fed with specific instructions of what it is supposed to do. You will define the cutting processes and the exact dimensions to be cut. The computer is like a robot and it will do everything that you have commanded it to do through the program you fed into it.
The main objective of the machine is to chip away pieces from blocks of material so as to come up with a given shape. The main work of the person operating this machine is to feed the instructions into the computer, feed the required materials into the machine and then leave the machine to do its work.
After the machine has finished creating one product, it will automatically remove it and then get started on the next product. This can go on for 24 hours a day with minimal supervision and control.
Often times, you will have to use different tools to make the cuts that you want. It is not possible to use just one tool throughout the whole process. For instance, you might require drill bits of different sizes.
If you are using a basic machine, then it will just move on one axis. However, if you are using a more advanced machine, it will move in the x and y axis and sometimes even in the z axis. It can even rotate on more than one axis. Some tools even have the ability to flip the prototype over. This does away with the need for laborers to manually turn over the prototypes.
Types
There are different types of CNC machines. A Cancam CNC Machine can fall into 2 categories. It can either be a conventional technology or a novel technology.
Conventional technologies include drills, lathes and milling machines. Novel technologies include electrical or chemical machining technologies and other machines such as laser cutting or plasma cutting machines.
You can cut any kind of material using a CNC machine. This includes wood, plastic, and metal, fiberglass, and foam, aluminum, steel or even copper.
Niches
It is important that you use a specialty machine that is meant for the specific manufacturing industry that you are in. This increases the chances of you getting good results. For example, if you want to cut highly durable materials, then go for electrochemical machining.
